Medicare Basics

Navigating Medicare can be complicated and confusing, but it doesn't have to be. We can guide you through the language and options to find what works best for you and help you avoid any fees or penalties.

Where do I start?

The first step of starting Medicare is to enroll in parts A and B, known as Original Medicare. This may happen automatically or may require you to take steps to start your enrollment. We recommend starting this process at least 3 months prior to your desired start date.

If you are just turning 65, you should be eligible to enroll in Medicare A & B on the 1st day of your birth month. You will need to contact the Social Security Administration to discuss 1) when you would like to start Medicare parts A and B, and 2) when you would like to start receiving your social security benefit. You can do that online at www.ssa.gov or call (877) 836-1560 directly to coordinate start dates. You may choose to delay enrollment if you will continue to have employer coverage, or you may find Medicare more affordable. It is critical to enroll in a timely manner to avoid any lapse in coverage, fees or penalties.

What are all the parts of Medicare?

In addition to Medicare parts A and B, there are also parts C and D.

Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Medicare Advantage is a Medicare-approved plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.

In most cases, you’ll need to use doctors who are in the plan’s network. Plans may have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare.

Plans may offer some extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover — like vision, hearing, and dental services. (medicare.gov)

To enroll in Part C, beneficiaries must continue to pay Part B premium, plus the private plan’s monthly premium (if applicable).

Part D (Drug coverage)

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines). You join a Medicare drug plan in addition to Original Medicare, or you can get it by joining a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage. Plans that offer Medicare drug coverage are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare.
