Special Enrollment Periods

Whether you need an ACA (Affordable Care Act) Insurance plan or a Medicare plan, there are only certain times during the year when you can enroll. Let’s review those options.

If you need an individual or family plan, (not Medicare) you could be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period for these reasons:

  1. Birth or Adoption
  2. Marriage or Divorce
  3. Loss of Coverage (not elective)
  4. Change of eligibility (such as loss of Cost-Sharing)
  5. Moving
  6. Unaffordable Employer-Sponsored Coverage (For more info, read this post: https://treasurevalleyhealth.net/is-your-insurance-affordable/)

A list of Qualifying Life Events and more information generated by Your Health Idaho (for those typically under 65 years old) can be found at: www.yourhealthidaho.org/special-enrollment

If you have or are eligible for Medicare, Special Events that could allow you to change plans outside of Annual or Open Enrollment include:

  1. Change of coverage area (i.e. you moved to new area)
  2. Loss of Coverage (i.e. you retire and employer coverage ends)
  3. You are or become Medicaid eligible
  4. You are offered new coverage through an employer or other source (such as VA)
